Serialization

The process of assigning a unique, machine-readable identifier to each individual physical unit - enabling item-level traceability, authentication, and lifecycle tracking.

What serialization means operationally

Serialization is the foundational capability that makes supply chain traceability possible at the unit level. Rather than tracking products by batch or lot - which can contain thousands of units with no individual identity - serialization gives each physical unit its own unique, unforgeable identifier. This transforms traceability from a batch-level approximation into an item-level certainty.

In practical terms, a serialised product is one where a unique code - printed as a QR data matrix, embedded in an NFC chip, encoded in a barcode, or registered as an RFID tag - can be scanned to return the identity and history of that specific unit. No two units in the world share the same serialised identity. This is what makes authentication, traceability, and counterfeit detection possible.

Serialization is now a regulatory requirement in several industries - pharmaceuticals (DSCSA in the US, EU FMD in Europe), medical devices, and increasingly in aviation, luxury goods, and FMCG excise categories.

Serialization in pharmaceutical traceability

Pharmaceutical serialization under DSCSA requires each prescription drug package to carry a GS1-standard serialised identifier containing the product NDC, serial number, lot number, and expiry date. This identifier is verified at each point of dispensing - ensuring that medicines in the supply chain are genuine, not recalled, and have followed the authorised distribution pathway.

EU FMD (Falsified Medicines Directive) imposes similar unit-level serialization requirements across the European Union - with verification at point of dispense by registered pharmacies and hospital dispensaries.

How Trailio implements serialization

TrueBrand generates and manages serialised product identities at scale - supporting QR, NFC, RFID, and data matrix formats across production environments. Each identity is registered in the Trailio platform at the moment of creation, with the product's full provenance record attached. AssetTag manages serialised identities for physical assets across their operational lifecycle.

TrueTax implements serialization specifically for tax stamps - each stamp carries a jurisdiction-specific serialised identifier that is issued to licensed manufacturers and verified through the supply chain to the retail point of sale.
