Tamper-Evident Logistics

Physical-digital integrity verification at every custody point in the logistics chain

How Trailio integrates HSA tamper-evident physical security products with digital event capture - creating a physical-digital chain where any tampering attempt is instantly detectable, attributable, and evidenced across the full logistics operation.

Physical tamper evidence is meaningless without a digital record to validate it

Security seals and tamper-evident packaging have been used in logistics for decades. But a broken seal, by itself, proves very little without a digital record that shows when it was applied, by whom, and when it was last verified as intact. Without this record, a broken seal cannot be attributed to a specific custody period - and liability disputes remain unresolvable.

Sophisticated actors know this. Seals can be broken and replaced with counterfeit seals that appear visually intact. Without a platform that can verify the seal\'s cryptographic identity at each checkpoint, substitution attacks go undetected.

Tamper-evident logistics - as implemented by Trailio and HSA - closes this gap by linking every physical seal to a digital event record, creating an evidence chain where tampering is both detectable and attributable.

Seal substitution attacks

Broken seal replaced with counterfeit seal - undetectable without platform verification

Unattributable tampering

Broken seal cannot be assigned to a specific custody period without scan records

Custody period gaps

Long periods between checkpoint scans allow tampering to go undetected for extended time

Counterfeit seal risk

Physically identical fake seals applied to tampered consignments without detection

Insurance claim failure

No verifiable evidence of when or where tampering occurred - insurance claims disputed

Physical-digital tamper-evidence in operation

Every seal application, checkpoint scan, and tamper event - digitally recorded and attributable to a named custodian.

  1. 1

    Physical Sealing

HSA tamper-evident product applied at origin

An HSA security seal, bag, tape, or label is applied to the asset, consignment, or packaging at the origin point. The physical product is serialised - each one carries a unique identifier registered in the Trailio platform at the point of application. From this moment, the physical and digital custody records are inseparable.

  2. 2

    Seal Registration

Seal identity registered - custody chain initiated

The custodian performing the sealing scans the product identifier to register the application event. This records who applied the seal, when, where, and to which asset - creating the opening event of the tamper-evidence record. Any subsequent discovery of a broken seal is traceable to this opening event.

  3. 3

    Checkpoint Scans

Seal integrity verified at every custody checkpoint

At each transit checkpoint - depot scan, cross-dock acceptance, vehicle load scan, delivery hub receipt - the seal identifier is scanned and the platform confirms it is intact, unmodified, and matches the original application record. If the seal identifier does not match or has been reported as broken, the asset is quarantined for investigation.

  4. 4

    Tamper Detection

Physical tamper evidence detected and escalated

If a seal is found broken or visually compromised at any checkpoint, the discovery event is scanned and recorded with the inspector's identity, location, and timestamp. The asset is placed in a tamper-alert state. Notifications are sent to the operations team, and any pending custody transfers for the asset are blocked until the incident is resolved.

  5. 5

    Investigation Record

    Full incident record compiled automatically

When a tamper event is detected, the platform assembles a full incident record: the original sealing event, every subsequent scan showing the seal as intact, and the detection event showing it broken. This record provides a timeline that narrows the window in which tampering occurred - identifying the responsible custody period.

  6. 6

    Delivery Confirmation

Seal confirmed intact at final delivery

At final delivery, the recipient scans the seal to confirm it is intact before accepting the asset. If the seal is broken at this final check, the tamper event is recorded before acceptance - ensuring the recipient's custody record is clean and liability is correctly attributed to the previous custody period.

Physical security intelligence from the platform

Seal authenticity verification

Each seal's cryptographic identity verified at every scan - counterfeit seals are immediately detectable.

Tamper window identification

The platform narrows the custody period in which tampering occurred - to the gap between the last intact scan and the first broken-seal scan.

Checkpoint scan compliance

Operations teams can see which checkpoints are performing required scans and which are creating gaps in the evidence chain.

Asset tamper history

Full tamper event history per asset or consignment - accessible for insurance claims, audits, and regulatory review.

Route integrity monitoring

Seals not scanned within expected timeframes for a given route trigger a gap alert - identifying potential off-route handling.

Escalation workflow management

Tamper events route automatically to the appropriate response team with full incident context and asset history attached.

HSA products engineered for tamper-evident logistics

The Trailio tamper-evident logistics workflow is specifically designed around HSA physical security products. Every product in the HSA range for logistics is engineered to be serialisable, scannable, and platform-integrated.

HSA Security Bags

Bank-grade and courier-grade tamper-evident bags. Unique serialised numbering on each bag. Registered in Trailio at point of application.

HSA Security Tape

Carton and pallet sealing tape with tamper-evident properties. Each roll serialised and traceable to the application event.

HSA Security Seals

Container, vault, and asset seals with NFC or QR identifiers. Cryptographically verified at each custody checkpoint.

HSA Pallet Covers
